YAB DATO’ SERI ANWAR BIN IBRAHIM

YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim was born on August 10, 1947, in Cherok Tok Kun, Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
He began his early education at Bukit Mertajam Boys School before continuing his secondary schooling at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). This prestigious institution has produced many national figures. In 1968, he pursued higher education at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.
Since his student days, his leadership has been evident as he was active in the student movement. He founded Yayasan Anda Akademik (YAA) in 1971 and is known as one of the founders of the National Union of Malaysian Islamic Students (PKPIM) and the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) in 1972. Through these platforms, he championed the intellectual, social, and political development of youth, thereby elevating the role of the younger generation as agents of change.
His involvement in the political arena began in 1982 as Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department. His career progressed rapidly with key posts such as Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports (1983-1984), Minister of Agriculture (1984-1986), Minister of Education (1987-1990), and Minister of Finance (1990-1998). In 1993, he was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.
After facing critical political challenges, he served as the Leader of the Opposition for two long periods, 2008-2015 and 2020-2022. His consistency in championing the people’s voice and the reform agenda demonstrates his unmatched integrity and resilience.
On November 24, 2022, he, also the Member of Parliament for Tambun and President of KEADILAN, was sworn in as the Tenth Prime Minister of Malaysia. With over five decades of experience in leadership, politics, and community activism, he introduces a framework based on justice, transparency, and reform to build Malaysia MADANI—an inclusive, prosperous, and peaceful nation for all citizens, regardless of background.
On the international stage, his name is recognised as a visionary leader. Since 2019, he has been Chairman of the Board of the Centre for Islam in the Contemporary World (CICW). He is also the founder of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) and currently serves as Chairman Emeritus.
He was given the primary mandate of Chairman of the World Bank and IMF Development Committee (1997-1998), an honour proving Malaysia’s capability to address global economic issues. Furthermore, he served as a Member of the Executive Board and President of the UNESCO General Conference (1988-1991), positioning Malaysia on the world’s diplomatic stage.
