29 OKTOBER 2026 | KHAMIS | 9.00 MALAM

GRAND BALLROOM, SHANGRI-LA KUALA LUMPUR

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabaratuh dan Salam Sejahtera.

YB Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah bin Azizan, Menteri Kewangan II;

Jadi saya harap rakan-rakan Bursa maafkan saya lah. Tapi dia tak ada pilihan (nada berseloroh).

Baik walau bagaimanapun, saya hadir.

Now, Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen. You know, in 1960, shortly after Merdeka, four stock broking firms met at Bank Negara for the first trading session of the Malayan Stock Exchange. This was certainly a small start. But 16 years later, in 1976, KLSE was incorporated. That is the institution whose 50th year we celebrate tonight.

So, there was this tacit understanding with Singapore to erase the earlier part. Half a century is a long enough for any institution and for this instance, for Bursa to become part of the country’s everyday life. Some of us here have lived through much of that history. The turbulence, the challenges. But I believe many of you here would remember when buying shares meant calling a broker and waiting for a reply. Today, a trade can be placed in seconds.

The market began with 264 listed companies and a capitalization of about RM12.7 billion. Today, thanks to you, too many of the players in industry. Today there are more than 1100 listed companies and the market is worth more than RM2 trillion. People sometimes command the success of the political system or leadership. But in all humility I would acknowledge that we all do play a part. And I come here to expressly thank you for your support and confidence.

These are companies that grew in capability and confidence, hired and trained people and took Malaysian products and services to the world. Bursa now spans equities, derivatives, commodities and carbon markets. It also led ASEAN in IPO for two consecutive years. Growth at that kind depends on confidence. Investors need sound institutions and fair rules. That is why this government has put a great deal of effort into governance and fiscal discipline and into making Malaysia a more attractive place to invest.

The results Alhamdulillah are showing in the first half of this year, Malaysia recorded RM218.5 billion in approved investments and under the MADANI economy, we are aiming to raise the ceiling of what our economy can achieve while raising the floor of our people’s living standards.

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

The market has been through hard years of course. I hope in the next few years we don’t need to go through that again, particularly next year or latest 2028, it will be elections here, financial crisis and the pandemic tested companies, investors and regulators alike. Through each of them, the capital market kept doing its job. It kept investment flowing and helped the economy recover.

So tonight I want to thank the regulators who protected the market integrity and the people who kept it running through good years and bad. Most of you will never see your names in a headline I hope this evening gives you a chance to enjoy what you have helped build.

So, ladies and gentlemen, Bursa is entering its next 50 years in a changing world. Geopolitical tensions are reshaping trade and investment. Technology is changing how work gets done, the energy transitions are creating new demands for capital. Malaysian companies will need to move up the value chain in semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and digital technology and compete confidently abroad.

The basic principle here is simple a company that asks Malaysians to invest in it must deal with them honestly. A good business should be able to raise capital on fair terms. Malaysians who save and invest would be able to trust the institutions behind the market.

Malaysia has also built real strength; Bursa is home to the global benchmark for crude palm oil futures. That’s why the Minister is here. Around 80% of securities listed on Bursa are Shariah compliant. And the exchange has been recognized as best stock exchange for Islamic listings for the ninth consecutive year. We should be proud of that.

Now I would like to see more mid-tier companies grow this is a major challenge. I discussed this extensively and become regional champions. Too many good companies stay small for far too long.

Bursa has a role in helping them take that step forward. If it succeeds, we should see more Malaysian businesses grow, more good jobs created and more Malaysians holding a stake in the country’s progress.

So tonight, again we honor the past and present leadership of Bursa Malaysia, its regulators, its market participants and the people whose daily work has kept this institution going. Malaysia the next 50 years of course without any doubt we look very different.

But I remain hopeful that when Malaysia mark Bursa centenary, they will still find an institution they trust, a market that serves Malaysian enterprise and a place where good ideas can find the capital to grow.

Sekali lagi saya ucap terima kasih dan penghargaan, kepada Farid dan seluruh keluarga Bursa Malaysia kerana kejayaan mereka yang membanggakan kita semua. Terima kasih.

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
