KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 2010 (Bernama) -- The Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) president, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, expressed hopes that the association's charity work would be emulated by other non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The prime minister's wife said as one of the oldest NGOs in the country, Bakti has eased the burden of the government, community and parents by helping differently abled persons.

"We know the government is working hard to provide the best for the disabled and various facilities and infrastructure have been created for them.

"However, Bakti also realises that it must work with the government, NGOs and private sector to carry out its responsibility in ensuring the welfare of this group," she said at the launch of the national-level Centre for Rehabilitation in Community (PDK) sale carnival at Titiwangsa Stadium, Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, here Saturday.

The event was declared open by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and attended by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and wife of Information Communication and Culture Minister, Datin Seri Maznah Rais.

The Semai Bakti programme, which aims to provide help to the disabled in Malaysia, also held in collaboration with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, welfare associations of wife of state leaders, NGOs and volunteers.

Rosmah said with increasing awareness and support from companies and the private sector, the disabled would be able to enjoy a better life.

She reminded volunteer bodies and NGOs to always be concerned about the interests of the people, especially the disabled, in carrying out their roles and responsibilities.

"As an NGO, Bakti feels very responsible towards the welfare of the disabled. I hope other NGOs will use Bakti's efforts as an example and the association as a role model," she said.
