PUTRAJAYA, Nov 29 2010 (Bernama) -- Poverty should not be an obstacle to hinder children from achieving their ambitions or dreams said Prime Minister's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Rosmah said children, especially those in remote and interior areas, must realise the importance of knowledge and education to change their lifestyle and achieve academic excellence.

"I believe children here have their own ambition. So, you must always work hard and believe that only education can change your lifestyle," she told 20 children from Sabah and Sarawak who excelled in the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) after hosting a tea reception at Seri Perdana here Monday.

Rosmah who is also the patron of the MASwings Community project who organised the event, themed 'Our Children, Our Future', comes under the Malaysia Airlines corporate social responsibility.

The Prime Minister's wife said to achieve that goal, the efficiency, effectiveness and responsibility of teachers was also vital to equip these children with the knowledge needed.

"The role of teachers is very important and vital to produce students who can excel in their studies and fulfill the aspirations of the nation," she said.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin who is also MASwings chairman said the programme was an effort by the organisation to enhance the quality of education among children from rural areas and provide them an inspiration to their road to success.

He added that the children were brought here for a three-day study cum tour, and visit for themselves the vast development in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

"I am sure more children will be inspired by this experience, especially the opportunity to savour a reception hosted by the Prime Minister's wife," he said.
