KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 2010 (Bernama) -- The prime minister's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor urged the community, especially educators and decision-makers, to ensure that the plight and needs of the disabled are not neglected by being close to them.

Rosmah, who is also the president of Bakti (Welfare Body of Ministers and Deputy Ministers), said the deprivation of the disabled of education and rights as enjoyed by others should not happen now.

"Regardless of the type and level of disability, they should not be deprived of exposure or education and training.

"We should also get close to them and understand their needs in looking after their lot," she said in her speech at the 4th Bakti-MIND Programme, on Sunday.

Rosmah said through education and kills training, the disabled would have the chance to improve their quality of life and reduce dependence on their family members, the community, non-governmental organisations and the government.

She said access to education was important but each level of society must know about special education.

"This is help teachers identify pupils who might have learning disabilities and thus require special education, she said.

The conference which is on until Oct 20, is on empowering the disabled through access to education through use of augmentative and alternative communication.

Present at the conference today were former Bakti president Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and Bakti-MIND Project chairman Toh Puan Dr Aishah Ong.
