KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 2010 (Bernama) -- The Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor has urged Malaysians to fulfill their obligations to their parents so that they would not have to be sent to welfare homes.

She said that children born in the modern era should not use the excuse that they were busy with work or did not have the financial means to the extent that they neglected their responsibility to look after their parents.

"I only hope that the mothers are not ignored just because they are no longer useful and difficult to look after. This perception should be removed from the present children," he said at the presentation of the Exemplary Mother Award 2010 at the Putera World Trade Centre, here Thursday.

She said the old folks should not be neglected because they had made much sacrifice to look after the family, to the extent that some of their children had become leaders and intellectuals.

Rosmah also called on the parents, particularly those with careers, to monitor the movements of their children despite their busy schedule.

She said that children should not be given too much freedom because this could have negative effects especially the peer influence as well as the information technology.

She also advised young couples to learn parenting skills through reading or attending courses which were now widely organised by government agencies such as the National Population and Family Planning Board and the private sector.

At the function, Rosmah, who was also the patron of the event, presented the triennial award to Awiah Awi, 64, who was chosen out of four finalists shortlisted.

Awiah, a single mother to nine boys, was announced as the Exemplary Mother for her success, sacrifice and contributions to the community and children.
