Every Child Should Have Right To Be Best, Say Children Of Malaysia | 13/10/2010

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 2010 (Bernama) -- Every child has the right to be the best. Education is a basic right which all children should have, regardless of whether they are far away from schools and teachers.

Therefore, we must find a way, so stated "A Message to The First Ladies from the Children of Malaysia".

The message was read out by Zoe Lim, 16, of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Sea, Petaling Jaya, to the first ladies on the last day of the inaugural First Ladies Summit 2010 here Wednesday.

The message also said it was not fair that only some children, the "lucky ones like us here today, are given that chance to be the best that we can be".

"Adults say children are a country's greatest asset. We know we have potential. But we also know that the potential in so many children is neglected or ignored. Eventually, it fades into nothing," said Zoe.

Fifteen first ladies attended the summit themed 'A Child Today, a Leader Tomorrow'. Six representatives of first ladies and 20 ministers also attended the event.

The First Ladies Summit 2010, initiated and hosted by the prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, focused on ways in which families, communities and governments could work together to uncover the potential in every child.

In the message, the children of Malaysia also said that every year, nine million children in the world died before they celebrate their fifth birthday, most of them from preventable causes.

"If their mothers had learnt to read and write, perhaps, not so many of them would have died," they said, adding that the lack of education was a problem in developing countries, but developed countries could not escape by saying "that's not our problem".

If "children are the leaders of the future", we ask (the world) only that you give us what we deserve -- well-nourished, healthy bodies, shelter, health care and good education.

"We don't have the answers to all the questions, but we do know that inside every child, every one of us, is the heart, soul and mind of a leader.

"Help us be the best we can be".
