MELAKA, Oct 9 2010 (Bernama) -- Muslim fashion designers and boutique owners in this region should put more efforts to expand the fashion industry through creativity and innovation, says the wife of the Prime Minister, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

In addition, they should also use and adapt to modern technology to produce in greater volumes and save cost without sacrificing quality, she said at the Malay World, Islamic World Fashion Festival at the Melaka International Trade Centre here Saturday night.

Through this method, Malay and Islamic fashion products would become more competitive in the domestic and global markets, she said.

Rosmah said that interest towards Islamic apparel at the international level of late had signalled dynamic changes in the interaction between Eastern and Western cultures.

She said Muslim women were also beginning to show interest in trendy fashions that were in consonance with Islamic values.

As such, she said it was not surprising if leading fashion designers were now busy promoting big name brands producing fashionable apparel which met the requirements of Muslims.

Rosmah said international fashion designers were now beginning to perceive Islamic fashion apparel as refreshing where fashion need not be promoted in a provocative manner.

Recently Rosmah revealed that the global market for Islamic fashion was estimated at RM302 billion annually.
