MELAKA, Oct 2 2010 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Government has lauded the inputs of the prime minister's wife to improve Sekolah Harapan (School of Hope) which was established here on Sept 17, for teenagers who became pregnant out of wedlock.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the state government was touched by Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor's efforts and would assist her in any way to obtain new inputs to help pregnant teenagers.

"Her visit to Centrum voor Integrale Gezinsgorg Centre (CIG) in Belgium on Oct 5, will surely help the federal and state governments in tackling social problems.

"We want her inputs, especially on the centre," he told reporters after opening the Melaka A Developed State (Melaka Maju) 2010 seminar in Bukit Baru here Saturday.

CIG, which is fully managed by the Belgian Government, provides shelter for pregnant teenagers to prevent untoward incidents like abandonment of babies and abortion.

Mohd Ali said the state government also welcomed assistance from any quarters, especially the women, family and community development ministry, to improve the school.

The chief minister said the school currently had 10 students, nine of whom were aged 17, while the other was 16.

Five of the students -- from Selangor, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor and Melaka -- were in their sixth month of pregnancy.

On Melaka Maju 2010, Mohd Ali said the status of a developed state or country would not be measured by the number of skyscrapers built, but also by the effectiveness of its human capital development.

"The development in these aspects should be balanced. We don't want to be like certain countries which are advanced in various aspects, but having social problems," he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is scheduled to declare Melaka a developed state at 8.10pm on Oct 20, through a video conference from the Putra World Trade Centre.

A separate celebration will be held at the same time in Stadium Hang Jebat here.

About 50,000 people are expected to flock the stadium to witness the declaration that night.
