NEW YORK, Sept 24 2010 (Bernama) -- Mrs Ban Soon Teak, wife of United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon, Thursday hosted a reception for wives of heads of governments attending the 65th United Nations General Assembly at their official residence here.

Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Michelle Obama, wife of US President Barack Obama, were among those invited to the reception, which was well-attended by ladies from across the globe dressed in their colourful traditional costumes.

Mrs Obama, who arrived first, looked elegant in a colourful summer outfit.

The wife of Malaysia's Foreign Minister, Datin Seri Siti Robiah Datuk Abdul Samad and wife of Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Datin Amy Hamidon attended the event held at Ban's brown brick neo-Georgian townhouse overlooking the East River and the Queensboro bridge.

The 14,000 square feet five-storey house, was built for Anne Morgan, the daughter of New York financier J.P. Morgan, and was donated to the United Nations in 1972.

Located in tiny neighbourhood in mid town Manhattan, the residence has housed every UN secretary general since Kurt Waldheim.

It also has served as a meeting place of kings, presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers.

On Friday, the secretary-general's neighbours include leading architect I.M. Pei, designer Kenneth Cole, and Hollywood actress Sigourney Weaver of Avatar fame.
