PEKAN, Aug 21 2010 (Bernama) -- Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, the wife of the prime minister, on Saturday proposed that the issues and problems associated with the disabled be made part of the mainstream development programmes for an effective outcome to the efforts to give them a better life.

She said the disabled should be given more opportunities to derive their fullest potential to play a role in contributing towards achievement of the country's vision.

"In this connection, I call upon non-governmental organisations and the corporate sector to extend cooperation to the government in terms of finance or expertise to help build this group which can contribute to national prosperity," she said.

Rosmah spoke at a ceremony where the Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) presented Aidilfitri contributions to the disabled at the Mydin Wholesale Emporium, here.

Rosmah also urged the community, especially youths, to come forward and help develop the disabled for everyone to enjoy peace and prosperity in the country.

"Many of us forget that the disabled are a part of our community and that they also have the same rights in terms of education, medical services, employment and social activities and deserve a better quality of life, just like the rest of us," she said.

At the event, Rosmah, who is Bakti president, handed over goodies donated by Mydin Wholesale Emporium in the form of "duit raya" (Aidilfitri donations), clothes and "kuih raya" (Aidilfitri delicacies) to 329 disabled people from 13 community rehabilitation centres in Pekan, Bera and Rompin.
