KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 2010 (Bernama) -- The prime minister's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor on Tuesday advised mothers and guardians of orphans, who are not placed in shelters or orphanages but are supervised by welfare associations, to be also concerned about the orphans welfare and not leave this solely to the associations involved.

They actually had a big responsibility towards guiding these children to become good citizens, she said.

"We are faced with various social problems like free mingling of the sexes, baby dumping, drug abuse and bullying in schools, all involving adolescents.

"Although the government has and is taking various steps to tackle these problems, the responsibility is not solely the government's but should be an integrated effort on the part of everyone in society," she said at a breaking of the fast function with orphans under the care of Persatuan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Islam Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, here Tuesday night.

These children who are supervised by the association live with their single mothers or guardians.

At the function, 634 orphans supervised by the association received Aidifitri aid of RM100 each while the association received donations totalling RM208,000 from various quarters including the Welfare Organisation of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) and the Pilgrims Fund.

Rosmah, who is also Bakti president and patron of Persatuan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Islam Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, also urged the association to constantly strive to improve its delivery system so that orphans under it care were moulded with the right qualities.

She also urged the corporate sector to do its part and help out welfare organisations in their work to help the less fortunate.
