KOTA KINABALU, July 15 2010 (Bernama)-- The sporting spirit of the wives of elected representatives, some of whom are grandmothers, should be emulated by younger women by keeping fit and active, said Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Rosmah, who is the president of the Welfare Body of the Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti), said the involvement of the wives of elected representatives in sporting activities showed that women's responsibilities as wives, mothers and grandmothers were no excuse for not keeping fit and healthy.

"Sports and other forms of physical activity help keep us healthy physically and mentally.

"By being fit, we will not only have the stamina to accompany our husbands on their visits to their constituencies, but also to contribute ideas and wisdom to help develop the areas," she said at the opening of the Annual Programme for Wives of Barisan Nasional Elected Representatives 2010, here Thursday.

It was officiated by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

Rosmah, who is the wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, hoped the programme participants would take this opportunity to foster closer ties, friendship and harmony like a happy, close-knit family.

She said good health and strong spirit of solidarity were the best combination for the elected representatives' wives to hold more community and welfare programmes.

"These programmes will ensure that such organisations as Bakti remain relevant and be able to meet the needs of the people," she said.

More than 400 wives of BN elected representatives are taking part in the annual three-day event from today, with the 1Malaysia Premier Trophy to be won in badminton of which Bakti is the reigning champion.

There will also be a bowling competition.

According to Rosmah, Najib had been invited to attend the badminton final this Saturday and to present the trophy to the winners.
