PUTRAJAYA, June 8 2010 (Bernama) -- The Girl Guides Association of Malaysia needs to become a pioneer for the growth and development of teenage girls to churn out disciplined and responsible citizens, said the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Rosmah, who is also the association's president, said as one of the earliest associations established in Malaysia 86 years ago, it needed to move in line with the times to help develop the potentials of teenagers.

She said the association's main challenge was how to remain relevant as a uniform body for the nation's teenage girls and become their association of choice.

"This will require us to think out of the box and be open to new ideas and thinking.

"We must be aware of the changing times, especially in terms of the psychological and mental growth among today's teens which is different from those in the past," she said when launching the association's 2009/2010 annual general meeting here Tuesday.

Also present was Girl Guides chief commissioner Datin Seri Zalillah Mohd Taib.

She also presented the Asia Pacific Leaders award and the Queen's Guide award to 44 eligible school students nationwide.

"We need to be more creative and innovate in coming up with new programmes and activities, as well as ensure it has a long-term effect on the people," she said.

Rosmah added that leaders must be brave in facing the challenges so that the association would remain as one that was respected and visionary.
