VIENTIANE, June 3 2010 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Thursday night left for home after concluding a two-day official visit to Laos.

The special aircraft carrying Najib and his wife departed from the Wattay International Airport, here at about 9.35pm local time.

Bidding them farewell were Laos Works and Transport Minister, Sommad Pholsena as the minister-in-attendance, and Malaysian Ambassador to Laos Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

The visit was Najib's first to Laos since becoming Prime Minister last year. The visit succeeded in enhancing relations and cooperation between the two countries especially in the trade sector.

In conjunction with the visit, Malaysia and Laos had signed an agreement to avoid double taxation and signed a memorandum of understanding in the higher education and sports sectors.

Before departing for home, Najib and his wife were feted to dinner at a leading hotel here by his Laotian counterpart, Bouasone Bouphavanh.

In his speech at the dinner, Najib said Malaysia would work closely with Laos to realise the Asean community in 2015.

"Malaysia and Laos share similar views on various important issues. We both share a deep commitment towards the pursuit of international peace and security," he said.

Najib also said that people-to-people contacts between the two countries have increased tremendously with the availability of direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Vientiane.

"Both sides should take full advantage of this facility and progress to work closer together and realise many other areas of cooperation," he said, and invited Bouphavanh to visit Malaysia.
