KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 2010 (Bernama) -- The Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, said she was proud of the 199,867 Permata Pintar programme participants who completed the UKM1 aptitude test held from March 1 to May 31, although the number of students who were eligible to proceed with the UKM2 test is lower this year compared to last year.

She said until May 31, a total of 3,518 students had qualified themselves for the UKM2 test with grades surpassing those from the previous year.

"Although the number of students has reduced, the highest marks are better with 73 per cent this year compared to 60 per cent last year," she told reporters at a news conference on the Permata Pintar programme at her residence here Tuesday.

Rosmah, who is also the Permata Negara Policy executive committee chairman, said the increased confidence in the students could be a factor for their improved achievements this year.

"We carried out the UKM1 and UKM2 tests for the first time last year, maybe they were not confident of sitting for the exams then," she said.

Meanwhile, she said 10 of the 27 Permata Seni programmes planned for this year had been implemented until June.

She said the programme, jointly carried out by the Permata Negara Centre and the Information Communication and Culture Ministry, would hold their main concert on Dec 10 and 11 at the Istana Budaya, and at the Premier Macau Creative Youth Arts Festival in Macau this November.
