KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 2010 (Bernama) -- Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, wife of the prime minister, on Wednesday appealed to the public to donate generously for the soon-to-be constructed orphanage of the Sikh-run Gurpuri Foundation in Bentong, Pahang.

Rosmah, who is president of the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti), said the orphanage would expand the role of the foundation in helping the poor.

She said the orphanage would also accommodate, among others, single mothers, old people and spastics children, as well as a skills training centre.

"I will also discuss with the Finance Ministry on tax exemption for the foundation because it is understood that it is paying tax," she told reporters after a visit to the foundation in Hulu Klang in conjunction with the Vaisakhi celebration.

Established in 2000, the Gurpuri Foundation is the first Sikh-run children's welfare home outside India. It now has 57 inmates.

Rosmah said the foundation recently bought a 6.5-hectare piece of land for RM1.2 million in Bentong along the KL-Karak Highway, about 45 minutes drive from Kuala Lumpur, to expand its role in assisting the needy.

A philanthropist had also advanced an interest-free loan of RM700,000 to facilitate the purchase of the land pending contributions from well-wishers, she added.

At the function, also attended by Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman, wife of the deputy prime minister, Bakti donated RM20,000 and 70 hampers to the foundation.

The foundation's head of operations, Giani Sukhdaiv Singh, said it planned to develop the land in stages after getting the funds and approvals from the relevant authorities.
