BUTTERWORTH, Feb 10 2010 (Bernama) -- Children from poor and well-to-do families in rural areas deserve the same education opportunity as those staying in towns, the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, said Wednesday.

She said children were the country's human capital investment and serious attention should be given to their development, regardless of their background and race.

Children were the country's main asset for a sustainable civilisation, she added.

"If they are given guidance and comprehensive education at an early stage, they will grow up to become more productive beings as well as with a positive personality," she told reporters after opening the "Each One Teach One" (EOTO) children's programme here.

Rosmah said the EOTO programme, organised by the Welfare and Social Development Organisation (PKKS) with the cooperation of the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry was a pioneer project which emphasised education for children from poor families.

The programme, held for the first time in Penang, involved 100 students, who were provided tuition after school hours by volunteers, who included lecturers and students from institutions of higher learning.

Rosmah hoped the programme would be expanded to other states, adding that the programme could help to overcome social problems

At the function, Rosmah presented reading materials, worth RM5,000, for EOTO resource room and certificate of appreciation to volunteers involved in the programme.
