SIBU, April 27 2012 (Bernama) -- The RM50-million second phase of the Sibu flood mitigation project will commence in the middle of next month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Friday.
The other phases of the project would be developed in stages, he said, adding that this was testimony that the government delivered on its promises even though the Barisan Nasional (BN) lost the Sibu parliamentary seat in a 2010 by-election.
"The first phase, involving an allocation of RM250 million, for the construction of five drainage systems, has been completed," he said when opening a new building of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Thai Kwang at Jalan Lanang, here.
Under the first phase, the government dredged five main bottleneck areas along the Rajang River to improve the flow of water, besides undertaking five major drainage works.
The allocation was given under the 10th Malaysia Plan.
