BANTING, May 28 (Bernama) -- The Rural and Regional Development Ministry has built 2,000km of 3,000km rural roads targeted for this year, said its minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He said the ministry was confident of meeting the National Key Result Areas (NKRA) target of building 3,000km of rural roads this year, including in Sabah and Sarawak, by year-end.
"Actually, we are ahead of schedule. We aspire to ensure that the people in rural areas are connected by a network of roads," he said after attending a healthy diet carnival and a community programme organised by the Kuala Langat Community Development Office here.
On housing, he said, the ministry was confident of meeting the NKRA target of building 50,000 houses for the hardcore poor this year as it had so far completed 39,000 houses.
Earlier in his speech, Shafie announced a RM2.8 million allocation for rural development projects in the Kuala Langat district. Of the amount, RM40,000 will be spent for housing assistance, a rural road in Sijangkang (RM200,000), Jalan Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Tanjung (RM100,000) and rural water supply (RM2.5 million).
