KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 2012 (Bernama) -- Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said on Monday cabinet ministers must be transparent and sincere in whathever they do, including declaring their assets as well as those of their family members to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The former prime minister said that previously, members of the cabinet were only required to declare their assets to the Prime Minister.
"So, this is something positive if they can declare to a body that has no political interest and is neutral," he told reporters after attending a Chinese New Year open house organised by the MCA, here today.
He said this when asked to comment on the suggestion by the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board that members of the federal administration, including cabinet ministers, submitted a copy of the their asset declaration file as well as that of their family's to the MACC.
However, Dr Mahathir said such information need not be publicised to the general public as this would lead to all kinds of speculations and slanders.
"If it goes to the public, there will be a lot of accusations, all kinds of slanders. So we don't want that. People will focus on that and not on unity and development of our country," he said.
Dr Mahathir said if the ministers refused to be transparent, including declaring their assets, then they should resign voluntarily before being removed.
