GEORGE TOWN, Aug 2 2012 (Bernama) -- Penang registers a drop in crime index of 19.2 per cent between January and July this year, with 4,645 cases recorded, from 5,750 cases during the corresponding period last year.
State police chief Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob attributed the drop to increasing police presence in crime-prone areas.
This was possible with the cooperation of auxiliary policemen, the Police Volunteer Reserve (PVR)and members of the Volunteer Patrol Scheme, he told reporters after a visit by the Home Ministry undersecretary (National Key Result Areas -NKRA) Dr S. Watchala here Thursday.
Ayub said the visit by Watchala was to gauge the effectiveness of the 4P concept (Protective, Performance, Proactive and People-Oriented) carried out by the police and its acceptance by the society.
Ayub will assume the post of the chairman for the NKRA secretariat on national security issues, effective Friday.
